What is the difference between hoist and overhead crane?

Hoist and overhead cranes are two types of lifting equipment used in various industrial applications. Both cranes and overhead cranes are used to lift and move heavy loads; however, there are some differences between these two types of lifting equipment. Following are some of the main differences between cranes and overhead cranes: 1. Function A hoist is a lifting device primarily used for vertical lifting and lowering of loads. Hoists are usually used in smaller spaces and are mounted on fixed points or on movable dollies. They can be used to lift loads ranging from a few kilograms to several tons, depending on their capacity. On the other hand, an overhead crane is a complex machine used to move loads both horizontally and vertically. Like hoists, overhead cranes can lift loads ranging from a few kilograms to several tons. They are often used in larger industrial spaces such as warehouses, factories and shipyards. 2. Design Cranes are relatively simple in design, with cables or chains attached to motors or hand cranks for lifting or lowering loads. Cranes can be electric or manually operated. An overhead crane is a more complex machine consisting of a bridge, trolley and hoist. Bridges are horizontal beams that span a work area and are supported by columns or walls. The trolley is a mobile platform located under the bridge carrying the hoist. As mentioned earlier, hoists are used to lift and lower loads. 3. Exercise Cranes are usually stationary or move along a straight path. They are designed to lift loads vertically or move loads along horizontal distances. Cranes can be mounted on trolleys to provide some degree of mobility, but their movement is still limited to a defined path. Overhead cranes, on the other hand, are designed to move both horizontally and vertically. The crane's bridge can be moved along the length of the work area, while the trolley can be moved along the width. This allows the overhead crane to position the load in different areas within the workspace. 4. Capacity Hoists and overhead cranes come in different lifting capacities to meet the needs of various industrial applications. Cranes range in capacity from a few hundred pounds to several tons. Overhead cranes range in capacity from 1 ton to over 500 tons and are ideal for moving extremely heavy loads. In summary, both hoists and overhead cranes are important lifting equipment used in various industrial applications. While cranes are primarily designed to lift and lower loads vertically, overhead cranes are capable of moving loads both horizontally and vertically. Also, the design and lifting capacity of overhead cranes make them better suited for larger industrial spaces, while hoists are a better choice for smaller spaces that only require vertical lifting.
